Arsenal are having a crazy season, one minute they’re amazing – the next, they’re hopeless. I’d love to see them finish fourth in their Champions League group and focus on winning the premier league.
As I’ve said before, I really enjoy watching Arsenal play. It’s always attacking and they have, to me, one of the best midfields in the world. Before the season started, we wrote an article claiming this could be their year – check it here.
They’ve had a bizarre season so far. In the league, they have won six, drawn one and only lost two matches so far, finding themselves in second spot on the table, only two points behind Manchester City. But then in stark contrast, they are rock bottom of the Champions League with no points to show and the mighty Bayern Munich still to face, twice.
My thoughts are that in order for Arsenal to make a real attempt at winning the premier league, maybe them finishing fourth in the champions league group wouldn’t be the worst thing. Finishing third would be the worst case scenario – it would mean they’d enter the Europa League. Everyone knows how tough it is to play on a Thursday, travel home and play again on the Sunday. It’d be better for them to finish fourth rather than third.
For the past five seasons, Arsenal have got through their Champions League group, reached the round of 16 and then never progressed any further. They often become hampered with injuries and never get close to winning it. This season looks no different. I don’t believe they can win this year without a world class striker at the club and quite a bit of luck.
I’d love to see Arsenal finish fourth in their Champions league group, and let Wenger play his youngsters in the Capital One Cup as usual, or even play the second rate side in the FA Cup and give his full attention to the league. Let the likes of Sanchez, Walcott, Ozil and Ramsey play no more than another 32 games this season. There are 29 games left in the league and maybe a semi final and final of the FA Cup or League Cup. Let them continue to be fresh all season, have minimal travel throughout Europe and go win the league.
They may not have a better chance for a while. Chelsea, in their current shambles, are already eight points behind Arsenal; Manchester United are still getting to know the Van Gaal style of play and will possibly get through their Champions League group and have more games ahead; and Manchester City may also get through their group and have extra matches to play.
