So #JapanGate is officially behind us and this weekend we take on a totally new adversary in Samoa and we need to beat them well. Important in doing that however is picking the right 15 men for the job.
Which 15 men are those however? Let’s take a closer look.*
*Selections all based on opinion
15. Willie Le Roux
Picked for his dependability, Kirchner was one of the worst players on the field on Saturday and he needs to make way for flamboyance against Samoa. He’ll struggle to see game time again I suspect.
14. Lwazi Mvovo
Mvovo did alright on Saturday and deserves to keep his spot. That plus the sight of JPP watching and waiting for the Japanese wing to bury us with that final try will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life.
13. Jesse Kriel
I thought Kriel was horrible on Saturday but he is a talented kid and as a part of a proper midfield combination – he might perform better.
12. Damian De Allende
This centre combo was the one shining light of our RWC prep and needs to be reinstated as a matter of urgency. No space for JdV in this team unfortunately.
11. Bryan Habana
A proven match winner – I’d give Habana another chance. Besides, Habana has a way of scoring tries against Samoa.
10. Handre Pollard
In the lead up to the game I felt Lambie offered more in the 10 jumper but I take that back – I think Pollard offers more magic. Lambie did ok on Saturday but change is needed.
9. Fourie Du Preez
8. Duane Vermeulen
He hasn’t played for the Boks this year but we need to rush him back. We need to turn our fortunes around and we need one of our best players to help us do that.
7. Schalk Burger
Burger tried hard on Saturday and was guilty of over elaborating at times but he is busy and will bleed for the team so he gets a spot too.
6. Francois Louw
Flo really should have made more of an impact against Japan. Teams like that should be like injured prey for a breakdown specialist like him but alas – he never really emerged from the tunnel. He needs to be 100% better on Saturday and I think he will be.
5. Victor Matfield (c)
Matfield would be my captain and my logic is simple. While Victor might be old – his age is less of a problem for what is required of him; win balls in the lineout, scrum well and clean rucks. Unfortunately JdV’s age is horribly exposed in the midfield.
4. Lood De Jager
Lood was our best player on Saturday and he’d keep his spot. Etzebeth made a big impact but I’d ask him to do the same again for 30 minutes in the second half.
3. Frans Malherbe
Frans is an excellent scrummager and he’d be in my team but I doubt this happen – Jannie will play.
2. Adriaan Strauss
Strauss was good when he came on and while Bismarck wasn’t too bad – I just love the idea of Bissy getting 30 minutes toward the tale end of the game. He will make a massive impact.
1. Beast Mtawarira
Beast would keep his spot too.
The team will be announced at some point today so I am not going to go into reserves as well but I will tell you which players I think should NOT be on the bench.
Players who should NOT be on the bench:
1. Coenie Oosthuizen – a penalty machine that would not have been in my squad to start with.
2. Zane Kirchner – Le Roux is the best no. 15 in the team, Lambie is second and Mvovo is third. Back of the queue with you.
3. Ruan Pienaar – he takes faaaaaaaar too long to clear the ball, it is murdering us.
