#TuesdayHIGH5: 5 Ex Boks Still Playing Rugby

Doing research for another post the other day, I was surprised to see that some ex-Springboks were still going at it across the pond. What’s more, some of these guys aren’t even that old.

So I thought I’d put five of them in a list for you in this week’s #TuesdayHIGH5.

Two guys who just missed the list due to retiring in 2014: Johann Muller and Andre Pretorius.

5) Pedrie Wannenburg

Test caps: 20

Current club: Oyonnax (France)

Age: 34

It feels like Wannenburg has been playing for as long as I have been watching rugby. With over 100 caps for the Bulls and over 20 for the Boks – you have to admire the loosie’s longevity.

4) BJ Botha

Test caps: 25

Current club: Munster (Ireland)

Age: 35

BJ was a part of the 2007 World Cup winning squad before leaving for the muddy isle in 2010 and has been plying his trade for Munster ever since. He must be doing something right to keep getting contract extensions to one of Europe’s top clubs.

3) Joe van Niekerk

Test caps: 52

Current club: Toulon (France)

Age: 34

A veteran of 52 Springbok caps – Joe van Niekerk is a quality player and despite his five year absence from the green and gold – many pundits still believe that there is a spot for him the current Bok fold. What do you think?

2) Brent Russel

Test caps: 23

Current club: Clermont (France)

Age: 35

Argentina v South Africa

This is probably the second most surprising name on the list. It’s hard to believe that pocket rocket Brent Russell last played for the Boks way back in 2006. Such a talent –  Brent could’ve quite easily have been featured in our previous post too.

1) Ricky Januarie

Test caps: 47

Current club: Lyon (France)

Age: 33

Januarie also last played for the Boks in 2010 and in the last couple of years of his career he hardly bathed himself in glory. That said, P Divvy would have to shoulder some of the blame here – he kept picking him, irrespective of form and eventually Ricky quit.

Remember this try that sealed the deal in Dunedin? Almost certainly his finest moment in the green and gold.

There it is, sports fans! Can you think of anyone else that should be on the list? Hit us with a comment or a tweet @leftbacks.
